AT NEW PLYMOUTH
Preparing For Wanganui Dominion Special Service. Now Plymouth, February 22. Fast work at New Plymouth this morning was confined principally to horses with engagements at the Wanganui meeting ou Thursday and, as only half a dozen from headquarters are making the trip, the trials in consequence were restricted. Galloping took place ,on the course proper and the plough, both being in excellent order. Footloose partnered Red Sand in a sprint over half a mile in 53, and did it well. The former was showing clear of •Red Sand at the end. Footloose looks a vastly imlproved youngster since his initial win at the New Plymouth meeting, and this fact might influence backers to give him as much support as Surmount when the pair meet at Wanganui. Lifeguard reeled off half a mile in his customary good style to record 50 2-5. After sprinting, Lifeguard was ridden by Williams in a round of the schooling fences, and although he has a lot to learn yet to be a proficient jumper, his efforts over five hurdles indicate a rapid improvement. Wynardo went away at a cauter from the half-mile post, but quickened bis stride at the straight to finish his task strongly. Chat (H. Dulieu) .was given a further education over the pony hurdles, and stfter preseverance managed to jump a couple cleanly. She gives the appearance of being a good type for this branch of the sport. Sbangri aud the unnamed Thomond three-year-old went from the stand five furlongs .pqst, but the latter was eased at the straight entrance to • allow Sbangri La to come home full of running iji 1.5, doing it nicely. Davistock (Williams) and ) Kentucky Song (Myers) were associated over a round of five hurdles and, except that Davistock only, partly rose at the second fence, both shaped satisfactorily, Davistock making good progress, considering he is a newcomer to this department. Kentucky Song is very fit, and should show to advantage at the Wanganui meeting. Bazra, who is destined for jumping races later, did two rounds of the plough at strong three-quarter pace. Glenthawn and Autosweep kept together over half a mile in 51 1-5, which is fairly good time for the plough track. Bonny Glow had a slight advantage over Race Call at the end of five furlongs iu 1.3, but the latter did not appear to be doing his best. Four jockeys who will ride only ou the first' day of the Wangnnui meeting before returning north for the Te Aroha fixture on Saturday, are L. J. Ellis, IV. Broughton, C. G. Gojilsbro, and 11. -Sargent. The last-named'has contracted to ride Palustrc. Day Wind, Sir Abb, Ivy ‘Willonyx, and Miss Tidal. The poor form shown by Philemup iu the last few months was responsible for Dulieu taking him to Te Rapa last week so that he could be returned to his owner. It is probable that Philemup will be spelled before taking a further active part in racing. Riding engagements for Thursday are:—R. ' Sargent, 'Student Prince, Brazen King;.. L. J. Ellis, Cuddle, Shangri iLa; C. Thompson, Kentucky Song; T. Williams. Davistock; T. Tito, Lifeguard; G. Tattersail, The Bigot; W. Broughton, Russian Ballet; C. G. Goulsbro. Surmount; J. Chote, Gold Glare; R. Glading, Sergia; L. Monkley, Amoroso, Prime Quality. -isl
