NEW INSURANCE BLOCK
On Central Hotel Site During the recent visit of Mr. C. H. Mitchell, of Mitchell and Mitchell, architects, to Melbourne, the sketch plans for the new offices for the Mutual Life and Citizens’ Assurance Company, to be erected on the site of the Central Hotel, Wellington, were approved, and the working plans are now being developed. Mr. Mitchell said yesterday that he expected to be able to call for tenders for this structure at the end of January or early in February. “It will be one of the most handsome buildings of its class in New Zealand,” said Mr. Mitchell. “Specially fine will be the facings. Up to the level of the first Jloor the building will be faced with Aberdeen red granite, and the whole of the rest of the nine-story building and tower will be faced with Australian-made terracotta tiles, which will add greatly to the appearance of the building.”
Mr. Mitchell said the work of demolishing the old Central Hotel would uot be put in hand until January.
