HEALTH OF NATION

Recreation Grounds Must Be Developed MINISTER’S VIEW Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, August 5. “Recreation grounds must be developed in every town, for we want young inen to have the facilities for playing every game their physique suggests,” said the Acting-Minister of Labour, Hon. P. C. Webb, in Wanganui to-day. “We are anxious for every man and woman, old and young, to have an opportunity of recreation and social gatherings. The greatness of any nation may be measured by the health and strength of its people.” While discussing with local bodies avenues of creative work which might absorb unemployed labour under the Government subsidy scheme, the Minister said he would like to see more of the pioneer spirit in evidence. People must plan ahead, and not one job should be left untouched that might develop into something of national value. He did not want local bodies to think that the problem was off their shoulders. Co-operation between all organisations was essential. “I do not know any work more favourable than that of providing beautiful surroundings for school children, and whatever labour we have to spare in our present scheme the school committees will receive their share,” said the Minister. He added that school committees throughout New Zealand had rendered great service. It was a work which the Government favoured and encouraged.
