AUSTRALIA POPULAR IN ENGLAND

“Finest Spot in World For Investment of Capital” SIR WILLIAM HUNT’S IMPRESSIONS “Australia is the most popular country in the world just now from, the English investors’ point of view,” said Sir William Hunt at a luncheon of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce yesterday. Sir William spoke on his recent journey by aeroplane from Sydney to London and back. The people in Englirnd, he said, believed that Australia had a great future not only as a pastoral country but also as a manufacturing country. They regarded it as the finest spot in the world for , the investment of capital. "Australia has done a marvellous thing in the last few years,” continued Sir William. “It is now producing iron and steel at a lower cost than any Other country in the world, and they say in London that a country that can do that has the ball at its feet. There is no doubt that Australia is extraordinarily popular in London just now.” Touching on the European situation, Sir William said that the strength, of England’s equalisation fund and of the British defence forces were two of the greatest factors for peace in the world. Just how much of the prosperity which England was now enjoying was dependent upon the rearmament programme it was difficult to say. Some contended that the defence policy was directly responsible, while others held that the return to better times was a normal development. At all events, there was no gainsaying the fact that the Old Country was experiencing a reign of prosperity. “And prosperity at Home means prosperity for us,” said Sir William.
