Nearly Run Over

adventure happened when I went out riding on my. bicycle with four young pals. We had had a lovely ride, when we came to a steep hill, at the bottom of which was another road. We were tearing down the h’U at a terrific pace, when I suddenly noticed that a motor-car had come out of the turning. Immediately I applied my brakes to pull up, but to my horror I found that they were not working properly. At first I thought I should be killed, and in a panic I tried to swerve out of the way of the approaching vehicle. In doing so I swerved too much, and my bicycle crashed into the side of the car. I shrieked with terror as I was sent flying from the saddle, and landed a. heavy thud on the pavement. Luckily for me I wasn’t hurt much, but my bike was badly damaged. After that incident I haven’t ridden my bicycle for weeks; the best place, for it Is in the shed, I think! —Heather Bell (16), Martiiiborough.
