DOG REGISTRATION FEE
Increase Recommended The Government is to be recommended by the Lower Hutt Borough Council, following a report by its by-laws and health committee, to increase the dog registration fee from 10/- to £l. There were far too many dogs in the borough, not properly kept. They were a menace insofar as they had vermin and infected young children, said Cr. W. A. Hall. Owners of registered dogs could not be compelled to place the collars on their animals, said the mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews. in pointing out that the number of collarless dogs was not a true indication of those unregistered. A future question for the committee was whether dogs should be allowed in the main street un--1 ; on leashes. “The borough has the best dog tax collector in New Zealand,” said Cr. J. Mitchell. The mayor said the collector must have the birth certificates of dogs; he was around to owners as soon as the dogs were at the registration age of six months. Presbyterian Women. The monthly meeting of the Knox branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union was held in the Knox schoolroom recently. The president, Mrs. Ferguson, opened the meeting with a hymn. Scripture reading and prayer. Mrs. Gorrie, who worked for many years among the Maoris, was the speaker. She spoke of the great efforts of the workers to make the Maori boys and girls selfsupporting. Beautiful work done by the girls was exhibited. Scarves, woven on hand looms, and effectively patterned, and also fronts to be worn with costumes, testified to their skill aud diligence.
