RECREATION GROUND CHARGES
Council Against Rise The Wellinglvu Rugby Union’s desire to increase the admission charge to the ‘ Lower Hutt Recreation Ground on Saturday afternoons from (id. to 9d., giving as the reason for its request the rise in the cost of wages and material, was not favourably received by the Lower Hutt Borough Council. . . / The council, in refusing to accede to the request decided at its meeting last night to point out that the charge of 6d. was specifically provided for in the agreement entered into between the union and the council. In any case, if there were any extra expense in the matter of costs for material and wages for preparing the ground, thes?e fell on the council and not on the union. WAIWETU BUS SERVICE Au extended bus service with u view to giving u quicker and more direct communication between Waiwetu and Lower Hutt was agreed to by the Lower Hutt Borough Council last night on the bus department’s suggestion. The mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews, pointed out the growth of the Waiwetu area. The service provides for an additional return service each hour between IV aiwetu and Lower Hutt, via Waiwetu Road Waterloo Road, Oxford Terrace, Knight’s Road, and Queen’s Road. The first of these additional buses will leave at 9.50 a.m., and thereafter hourly until 6.50 p.m., with one at 7.50 p.m. on Fridav nights. There will also be a special bus on Saturday nights after the theatres come out. LOWER HUTT W.C.T.U. Mrs. Ballantyne presided over the recent meeting of the Lower Hutt branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. It was decided to send messages of sympathy to Mrs. Scott and the family of the late Mrs. Priestley. Arrangements were made for members to present a programme of articles on peace nt the May meeting. Mesdames R., Hayes and Swift, sen., were appointed
delegates to represent the union at Temperance League meetings, Mrs. Ballantyne gave an interesting talk on “Purity,” commencing with spiritual references to clean hands and pure hearts. She urged mothers to guard their children by choosing good books, making friends aud talking with them in their early years, and also by personal example. Mrs. Baigent expressed the thanks and appreciation of the audience. Mrs. Dawson drew attention to the many difficulties confronting young people of the present day. Mesdames R. and H. Heyes were hostesses.
