BOROUGH AFFAIRS
Lower Hutt Council Meeting The borough engineer, in reporting upon the improvement in the lighting of High Street between the bridge and Queen’s Road, considered that 15 lamps were necesssary on this stretch, stated the works committee in its report to the Lower Hutt Borough Council last night. The cost of procuring and installing mercury vapour- lamps was -£3OO, while incandescent lamps would cost £2OO. A firm whose representative had just returned from abroad with knowledge of the latest lighting equipment was prepared to erect three lamps at no cost to the council bar that of installation said the mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews. If the council considered the lamps satisfactory it would probably get 14 or 15. Cr. J. Braeell said other streets needed lighting. The mayor: You and I will have a say after the trial as to whether we will buy these lamps or not. Cr. Braeell: I'll want to say a lot about that. The trial at the cost of installation only was agreed to. The council appointed Mr. W. H. Leighton aa its assessor. The plans of the defined housing area had been approved, subject to the council undertaking the survey of any individual houses outside the area which were known to council officers tb be below standard, advised the Ministry of Housing. It was decided to advise the Wellington City Council that the council could not at present accept the invitation to rejoin the water board. In reply to a request of the Bank of New Zealand to advise it of the overdraft limit likely to be required by the council during the forthcoming financial year, the council fixed the limit at £20,000.
