INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL
Position at Palmerston North DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION TO INVESTIGATE Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, March 30. Interviewed by "The Dominion" tonight, the chairman of the Wanganui Education Board, Mr. E. S. Hemingway, outlined the present position regarding an intermediate school for I’almerston North. He said the Director of Education would vis-tit I’almerston North as soon as convenient after Easter to investigate the possibilities of an intermediate school. It would mean either a new school or the utilisation of an existing primary school as an intermediate school, in any case, the board would have to build a new primary school shortly toward Takaroa to cope with the increased attendance at other schools, most of which were full. The intermediate school womd take fifth and sixth standard pupils from other schools, relieving the congestion at them all. Where the intermediate school would be rested with the director. Jt might be the Central School, College Street, or the West End School. It certainly would be in the centre of I’almerston North. The board for instance, would certainly not build 'a school toward Takaro to use as an intermediate. However, this new school would take the surplus from the West End and Central schools. An intermediate school had to have in numbers, to be effective, at least 500 to 600. There would be no difficulty, in getting this number at an intermediate school at I’almerston North. That at ■Wanganui had worked splendidly. The intermediate school would be staffed by teachers, all expert in their particular branch, and drawn from the existing primary and secondary schools. If an intermediate school were decided upon for I’almerston North, it would not operate until next year.
