At Port Adventure, Stewart Island, whei'e the old settlement was, there are some 60 acres of splendid cocksfoot grass, and this has been made the happy hunting ground for Virginian deer. In tho evening they can be seen in twos and threes dotted about the pasture and fishermen who anchor in the harbour at night get plenty of venison for their larder. An unusual inhabitant also is an old white hen left there some nine years ago by a prospective settler. Recently two fishermen decided to catch it, but, to their surprise, as soon as the bird seemed .cornered, it rose and flew off like a wood pigeon. Several nests of this lonely fowl were seen with from 1" to 15 eggs in, but, of course, infertile.
