FIRE BRIGADE WORK

Annual Conference of Association DEMONSTRATION EVENTS Twenty-three brigades were represented at the annual conference ot the United District Fire Brigades’ Association, which was held at Lower Hutt on Saturday. Superintendent C. H. scott, Dannevirke, presided. Delegates were accorded a civic welcome by the mayor, Mr. J. W. Andrews. On behalf of the Lower Hutt Borough Council and the citizens ot the borough, Mr. Andrews extended greetings to the delegates. Very little m the way of public service, he said, was more deserving of the thanks of the community than the work of the fire brigades. Firemen had to meet new conditions like everyone else. There were new fire hazards, new types of buildings, and new emergencies to meet. The activities of the association dining the past year were reviewed in the annual report. The executive placed on record its appreciation of the generosity of Secretary Hollands, Featherston, in presenting a cup to the association. The cup. was to be competed for at the association’s demonstration in a consolation event not on the programme. The Petone brigade was congratulated on its recent success at the United Fire Brigades’ Association’s demonstration at Nelson in winning the championship. A paper was given by Fireman J. R. Gaynor, Petone, on the sporting side of competition work. The following officers were elected : — President, Deputy-Superintendent H. H. Collings (Taihape) ; vice-presidents. Superintendent R. Wakelin (Carterton), Fireman H. Schei’f (Waipukurau), Fireman L. Horne (Petone) and Superintendent W. Lawry (Pajiiatua) ; secretary, Foreman A. S. Annand (Waipukurau') ; treasurer, Superintendent J. A. Chambers (Waipukurau) ; auditor, Mr. A. C. Holms (Waipukurau). The conference carried a Carterton remit urging that events be placed on the next association programme suitable tor five-men teams. After discussion a Waipukurau remit advocating “that all future programmes of the association be drawn up by the executive,” was amended by the addition of a proviso that the brigade holding the demonstration be given an opportunity to submit suggestions for the programme. An Eketabuna remit that competitions be run according to programme and not altered on the day of competition, received the support of the conference.
