* Among the recent acquisitions of the Hawke’s Bay Art Gallery and Museum are a number of Maori curios recovered by Dr Allan Berry from a midden on the small hill known as Quarantine Island This collection includes two large stones used by the Maoris for beating flax, two large pieces of lime stone on which adzes, axes, and spears were sharpened, and a number of small Maori figures carved from pumice. Another interesting exhibit is a collection of articles, including a gong, brass bowl, lady’s slippers, and a strip of embroidery, which were taken from the Imperial Palace at Tientsin during the Boxer Rising and given to the museum by Mr. Lawrence Wright.
