INDUSTRIAL CASES

Work of Arbitration Court NO SECOND TRIBUNAL Although the Arbitration Court is exceptionally busy just now, the administrative authorities do not consider it necessary to make provision for assistance in overtaking the court’s programme of work. The question was discussed by the Minister of Labour, Hon. 11. T. Armstrong, in an interview yesterday, and lie made it. clear that no alteration in existing conditions was contemplated by the Government. "There is no doubt that the court is being exceptionally hard worked at present,” said Mr. Armstrong, “but it is also clear that: it is gettin- through its work well and without undue delay. Conditions should become more normal in the near future, and when the heaviest part of its programme has been disposed of the court doubtless will be able to meet all the calls upon it.

“In any ease it would be very difficult to provide assistance in the form of a second tribunal to deal with industrial cases. It would not be practicable to have two courts functioning, for the simple reason that almost inevitably there would be conflicting points of view. It is better to have a little delay than run the risk of having some confusion. “Nor does it seem necessary at the moment to establish a separate court for dealing with industrial compensation cases. There are not many compensation plaims awaiting consideration, and it looks as though the Arbitration Court will be able to cope with both industrial arbitration and comlieu sat ion cases.”
