CHERRY BLOSSOM FAIR

Hutt Methodist Guild, Wesley Hall, Lower Hutt, asisumed an Oriental aspect on Friday afternoon, and provided a charming setting for the cherry-blossom fair held under the auspices of the Lower Hutt Methodist Women’s Guild. The Rev. H. Peat, in introducing the mayoress, Mrs. .1. IV. Andrews, who opened the fair, paid a tribute to the women of the. guild, who had been preparing for the fair for months. Much of the church's success was due to the work of the women, Mr. Peat said. Mrs. Andrews, who was presented with a bouquet of roses and maidenhair fern, said that the choice of cherry-blosson was a happy one, for it symbolised spring, and she drew a parallel between the guild and the cherry tree, which after apparent inactivity during the winter months, came to fruition in the spring. The stalls were gaily festooned with cherry-blossom, and those in charge were clad in picturesque Japanese garb. The stall-holders were: Produce stall. Mesdames Wansborongh and Wins),-ide; plain and fancy stall, Mesdames Stonehouse. Shearer, Ainsley and Cains; cake stall, Mesdames Hazelwood, Andrews. Saunders and Hyndman; sweet stall, Mesdames Russell, Phillips. Maunder; bookstall, Mesdames Peat. Jenson. Aldersley, Teasdill; shilling stall. 'Mesdames Eddy and Heap; dip, Miss N. Shearer; miscellaneous stall. Mrs. Hall; afternoon tea. Mesdames Wakelin, Muir. Lambert. Clark, Akhurst. Knight, Strand. Burgess. Roberts. Scots-on.

In the evening a short programme was presented. Mrs. F. Potter and Mrs. Stedman contributed vocal coins. and Miss Thea Smith recited. Two plays were presented by the following members of the Kia Hiwi Club; Mrs. Wilfred Jones. Misses Ngaire Shearer. Betty Dowland, Mabel Smith. Rita Robinson. Marie Jenkins.
