BATHING PAVILION

Proposal Before Petone

Council

The Petone Borough Council decided last night to confirm its previous- decision to build a central bathing pavilion, with bathing facilities at McEwen Park and the west end. On the recommendation Ot the beach beautifying committee, the council decided to build the payilion on solid ground instead of on reclaimed land. ' Application is to be made Io the Loans Board, and the proposal will be placed before the ratepayers.

Moving the adoption of the report. Cr. G. London eaid the committee felt that a central pavilion would be an added attraction to the beach. The mayor, Mr. A. Scholefield, said the only difference between the (suggestion and the report presented in February was that in the present case there would be a saving of £l4OO, as no reclamation would be required. “A central bathing pavilion would be nothing less than a white elephant,” declared Cr. D. M. Dickson. If bathing facilities were constructed they should be of such a nature that the council could hope to get some return from them. If the money were applied to the erection 01. say, four small buildings in various parts of the beach and a charge made more revenue would result to the council. Cr. J. R. Gaynor said that with four buildings the cost of collecting the fees would eat up the revenue. It was now a question of building a new pavilion or spending a large sum on repairs.
