The Pedal Cyclist

Sir, —“An extraordinary bird is the pedal cyclist. He resents advice, aud he has a complete disregard for motorists and pedestrians alike.” This extraordinary statement is attributed to Mr. F. C. Spratt, chairman of the education am! propaganda suh-committee of the New Zealand Road Safety Council. It would be pertinent to ask Mr. Spratt what advice he has ever given to cyclists, and what particular qualifications he possesses for giving such advice. The Hon. Robert Semple, Minister of Transport, has asked for the co-operation of all roadusers in making our public highways safe for their legitimate use, aud here we have a man, presumably appointed by the Minister, deliberately setting himself out to antagonise eyelists by making use of wholly uncalled-for language.

That there are numerous small boys on bicycles who show a total disregard for everybody on the road cannot be denied, but Mr. Spratt seeks to include all cyclists iu that category, and, as chairman of the education committee, he should endeavour to devise some means of teaching these youngsters better manners, instead of making a wild statement which has no foundation in fact. If this is the sort of thing we are going to get from the Road Safety Council, it lias made a very strange debut. —I am. etc., JOHN RODGERS. Wellington, November 13
