STALACTITE BROKEN

Visitor to Cave at Waitomo SEQUEL IN COURT Vandalism In one of the three Waitomo Caves was the subject of an action in the Magistrate’s Court at Te Kuiti recently, when A. J. Bruff, Christchurch, was convicted and ordered to pay costs totalling £3/8/- for damaging a stalactite in the Ruakuri Cave. The guide who had taken a party which included defendant through the eave, said defendant started criticising the scenery, and then complained when witness would not permit him to take a dog through the cave. This was against the regulations. When the party reached the portion of the caves known as the Bridal Chamber, defendant broke away a portion of a stalactite, after being warned of the heavy penalty, witness added. William O’Connell, manager of the Waitomo Caves Hostel, said he was informed by the guide of the offence having taken place, and wrote to the Tourist Department, which gave him authority to proceed with the case. Remarking that the costs were heavy, the magistrate, Mr. F. 11. Levien, S.M., convicted defendant and ordered him to pay costs.
