Wellington Society Meets

At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Wellington centre of the New Zealand branch of the British Red Cross Society and Order of St. John, held at headquarters, Dixon Street, on Tuesday, Lady Myers was warmly welcomed on her return from abroad.

The ease of tin ex-service married man with family, broken down in health, and admitted for a period of three weeks’ convalescence to Mowai Home, was again reviewed. The period had expired and slight improvement was shown in the man’s condition. It was decided to extend the convalescence for a further two weeks, cost of maintenance to be shared equally by the War Relief Association and the society. Application had also been lodged for recognition as a pensionable disability.

The women’s committee reported that they had met at the depot throughout the month, packing and distributing to hospitals in the district comforts in the form of cigarettes, tobacco and sweets. Attention was now being given to the preparation of Christmas gift parcels, it being estimated that there would be between three and four hundred ex-servicemen in hospital at that period. The visitors to the Wellington Hospital. Victoria and Ewart Wards, and Forirua Mental Hospital reported that regular visits hnd been carried out and comforts distributed. A number of applications for clothing had been received from disabled ex-N.Z. E.F. and Imperial men during the month and had been attended to.

A comprehensive report was submitted by Matron Ingles of the Pukeora Sanatorium covering Red Cross activity at that institution during the month. Subbrnnehes in the Hawke’s Bay, in continuance of the work which they had carried on since the institution opened, had paid regular visits, distributing fruit, cakes, preserves, cigarettes and tobacco. Appreciation was expressed by the centre executive to the sub-committees in Hawke’s Bay and the many private individuals who forwarded gifts in the society's name.

The Mowai Home Committee h."d mol to discuss requirements with the matron. Attention to these matters had been approved. Tho following gifts sent in to the matron during the month were acknowledged : Magazines, Wellington Women’s Club, Mr. Hampton, Miss Jackson, Mrs. Flanagan; papers, Mr. Boyes, Second Church of Christ; dainties, Wellington Meat Company; flowers. Mirw Poole, Mrs. Goring Johnston; cakes and savouries. Mrs. Hodson ; concert parties brought by Mrs, Jackson and Mrs, Btev--6112.
