WEIGHT-LIFTING
First Wellington Championships
A sport as yet in its infancy in New Zealand is weight-lifting, although it has a large following in Australia and is a regular feature of the Olympic Games. Prior to last year interest was almost confined to Auckland, where the keenness of Mr. J. Elliott, the well-known exponent of the sport, made itself felt. Then a New Zealand association was formed, and now for the first time Wellington enthusiasts have arranged a provincial championship. It will be decided on November 25, and subsequently representatives will be chosen to proceed to the New’ Zealand championships at Auckland on December 5.
The provincial championships are to be divided into six classes by weight —bantam, feather, light, middle, lightheavy, anti heavy (over 12.12). In order to give those interested an opportunity to learn the proper technique of weight-lifting, instruction classes have b.een arranged. All championships are at present held in Auckland.
