WOMEN GOLFERS HOME

Failed to Win Tasman Cup, But Had Happy Time BACK FROM AUSTRALIA Looking very well after their visit to Australia, and freely admitting that they had spent a very happy time, members of the New Zealand women’s golf team returned by the Marama which reached Wellington yesterday. AH six members of the team were generous in their praise for the splendid hospitality they were accorded during their stay in Australia, and they brought back to the Dominion with them many happy memories of their tour. The captain of the team, Mrs. M. H. Godby, said that they were naturally disappointed in not having returned with the Tasman Cup, but the team had given a good account of itself in Australia. They looked forward to winning the cup next year, when an Australian team would visit these shores. The opinion that the New Zealand players made a good showing was expressed by Miss O. Kay, who won the Australian women’s championship by defeating Mrs. B. Fullerton-Smith in the final. “Although we did not bring back the cup, as we had hoped to do, the experience we gained in Australia will be a great benefit to us.” She said the courses in Australia were longer and more heavily bunkered than those in this Dominion.

Miss Kay had not been playing well herself in the early stages of the tournament, but improved as the fixture progressed. Two players who had failed to strike form at any stage of the tournament were Miss J. Hotwell and Miss V. Fleming, although toward the end they gave glimpses of their true capabilities. A point which Miss Kay commented on was the way the Australians became “all worked up” in championship play. The standard of play in Australia was definitely no higher than that in New Zealand, she said, and with the experience the New Zealand women players had gained they should have no difficulty in giving a better account of themselves next year. Playing in her first championship tournament, Miss N. Hutton demonstrated that she was the outstanding Australian competitor.
