MEDAL PRESENTED

New Zealand Association of Refrigeration

A complimentary dinner to Mr. C. R. Barnicoat, M.Sc., of the Dairy Research Institute at Palmerston North, was given at the Royal Oak Hotel last night by the New Zealand Association of Refrigeration, when the chief guest was presented with the F. J. Walker medal for the best paper read, before .the association last season, advancing the science of refrigeration and its allied industries. Mr. Barnicoat, who leaves shortly for the United States to undertake research study under a Commonwealth Fellowship, wns presented with the medal by Mr. F. W. Grainger. His winning paper was on the chilling of beef, and in October last it was read before an international conference on refrigeration in Holland by Mr. G. W. Clinkard, New Zealand Government representative in Brussels. The medal, of gold, is presented by Mr, F. J. Walker, governing director of F. i. Walker, Ltd., the frozen and chilled meat exporting flrm, of Sydney. Among those present at the dinner was Dr. E. Marsden, secretary to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, who proposed the toast of the association, praising highly its work in studying problems of research into the best forms of refrigeration and applying results to the export of produce.

Mr. Graingei’ said tlie association hail 170 members from Auckland to Bluff. Papers which were prepared by members on refrigeration problems were circulated not only throughout New Zealand, but also in Australia, England and U.S.A. He appealed for support from the younger refrigerating engineers, who would have to carry on the work of improving methods of food preservation. Mr. A. S. Mitchell, secretary to the association, said the growth of the association in five years had been most heartening. it existed to co-operate with research authorities in applying the results of experiment to Industrial practice. x The following was the toast list: “New Zealand Industries,” proposed by Mr. G. M. Valentine and responded to by Messrs. W. Cable (engineering) and J. L. Gicbard (building) ; “Association of Refrigeration,” Dr. E. Marsden— Messrs. F, W, Grainger and A. S. Mitchell; “Kindred Institutions,” Mr. G. A. Lawrence—Mr. N. J. Webster (Society of Mechanical Engineers) ; “The Guest of Honour (Mr. C. R. Barnicoat),” Mr. F. W. Grainger; “Mr. F. J. W. Walker, donor of the medal,” Mr. W. A. Fisher; “The Press,” Mr. A. E. Hefford. It was announced that the next annual meeting would be held at Wellington.
