Waipukurau Prices Firmer

Waipukurau, July 21.

A rise in prices was teen at the Waipukurau sale to-day. All sections of fat cattle were of fair quality with prices showing a hardening movement. The advance in store lines was marked while fat and store sheep sold well at higher levels than recently.

Cattle: Four prime Hereford and Red Foil heifers, £8; 9 prime P.A. and erosi heifers, £B/4/-; 9 ditto, £7/15/-; two heavy prime Hereford bullocks, £10; 12 good store P.A. steers, £7/16/ , 60 wellgrown P.A. cross, £7/12/-; 9 rising two year P.A. cross steers, £6/15/-. and 34 ditto. £6/17/6; Jersey cow with calf. £5 10/-. Sheep: Four prime lambs, 28/3; one prime maiden ewe, 28/-; 40 heavy ewes, 26/6; 11 prime wethers, 26/10, 211 four, six and eight-tooth ewes, r.w. Southdown rams, 2S/6; 156 six and eight-tooths ditto, 28/9; line 185 hoggets, 27/3; 85 five-year ewes, r.w. Southdown rams, 27/6. Sale of Dairy Herd Greytown, July 21. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., held ’a sale of Messrs. Montgomerie Bros’, dairy herd yesterday. The herd, which comprised 58 cows, has proved itself one of the highest producing herds in the district. Bidding was very spirited, the highest price being £l4, while several made over £lO. The line averaged the satisfactory figure of £9/10/-.

Masterton Dairy Herd Masterton, July 21. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., held a sale of Mr. K. A. Wilton’s dairy herd, comprising 60 cows and 25 heifers, at the Masterton yards to-day. The herd has been tested for several years, and Mr. Wilton has always culled heavily, with the result that all cows offered to-day had good butterfat records. Despite tho prevailing bad weather conditions, there was a good attendance of buyers. Cows averaged £B/8/-, and heifers £5/5/-. Top price for cows was £ll/10/-, and for heifers £7. A few stud cows were also offered, and these sold well, making 15J guineas. The machines and rest of the plant offered made good values.

, Pahiatua Sale Pahiatua, July 21. Sheep met a good demand at the weekly Pahiatua sale to-day, selling at late rates. Dairy cows close to profit and showing quality brought keen competition, and sold at satisfactory prices, but late calvers and indifferent sorts were hard to quit. The Loan and Mercantile Company, Ltd., offered a small yarding of sheep and a fair entry of dairy cattle to a good attendance of the public, making the following values: —Sheep: Aged ewes, r.w. Southdown ram, 23/8; b.f. lambs, 20/8. Cattle: Best dairy cows, close to profit, £5 to £B/10/-; late calvers, £3/10/- to £5; inferior sorts, £2/15/-: cows in milk, £3 to £3/2/6; small springing heifers, £3: Jersey bull, £5/7/6. Norsewood Sale Dannevirke, July 21. The entry of sheep at the Norsewood sale yesterday was very small. The cattle were represented by a large number of dairy potter sorts, and a few dairy cows and heifers coming to profit. Pigs were entered freely, but prices were low. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report having sold the following: Weaner pigs, from 12/6; store cows, £2/10/-; springing heifers, from £5/5/- to £6. Rimu battens at 20/3 per 100; totara and black birch strainer posts from 6/6 to 8/each: 32 lots of timber from 9/- to 16/6 per lot. ‘ . ‘

Williams and Kettle Ltd. offered a small yarding of sheep and a good yarding of cattle and pigs to a good attendance of local buyers. All classes of stock sold well up to late rates. They quote as follows:—Sheep: Good b.f. lambs, 17/3 to 18/2; medium b.f. lambs, 15/10. Cattle: Fat Jersey cows and heifers, £3/7/- to £4/12/6; springing cows, £3/10/- to £5 5/-; store cows, £l/14/- to £2/5/-; Jer-

sey bulls, £2/10/-. Pigs: Weaner pigs, 10/6 to 17/-. The Hawke’s Bay Farmers' Co-opera-tive Association Ltd. offered a small yarding of sheep and a fair yarding of cattle and pigs. Fat sheep were in keen demand, fat wethers making up to £1 12/7. Dairy cattle sold well. Weaner pigs were keenly competed for. They quote sales as under: Fat wethers, £1 6/-, £l/9/- to £l/12/7; fat ewes, £l/2/6 to £l/4/2; wether hoggets, 18/-; fat P.A. heifers, £7/6/-; fat Jersey cows, £3 15/-, £4 to £5/1/-; springing Jersey cows, £4, £5/7/6 to £7/10/-; springing Jersey heifers, £5/10/- to £6/10/-; store cows, £l/14/-, £l/17/- to £2/15/-; weaner pigs, 10/-, 12/-, 14/-, 14/6 to 15/-.
