WIN FOR WANGANUI

Interprovincial Rugby Match WAIKATO BEATEN 17-9 Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, July 21. An interprovincial Rugby match between Waikato and Wanganui was played at Wanganui to-day and resulted in a win for the home team by 17 points to 9. Wanganui came to light in the second spell. Up till then Waikato made the game, which was marred by the slippery ball. In the first spell Waikato’s forwards possessed more sting and were helped by. the southerly wind. The back line functioned well and took advantage of Wanganui’s refusal to tackle, as well as a weakness in the.chain, where R. Chase failed to show form. Waikato’s best backs were D. Buick, the ex-Wairarapa representative player, whose attack and defence on the wing were very sound; Aitken, a fine type of centre, and Russell, a tricky half-back. Wynyard, Sharp, Taylor and J. Leeson were the best of the visiting forwards. For Wanganui, K. Welsh, at full-back, played a sound, safe game, and made some clever recoveries. D. G. Barton, centre, was outstanding, and was responsible for initiating many attacks. R. Chase, second five-eighth, was disappointingly weak. There was good understanding between H. Brogden, half-back, and D. Thompson, next to him. Gay Lockett led his forwards characteristically, and James, Davidson and McGregor were conspicuous also. Catley hooked the ball more often for the visitors than Poppe did "for Wanganui. Waikato attacked from the outset and drew first blood when Aitken intercepted a pass and sent out to D. Buck, who ran half the length of the field to touch down for an unconverted try. Wanganui, lacking the help of the wind, were forced back to thgir own line, where from a scrum Russell dummied and passed to Solomon, who scored at the corner. A. Lisette’s kick again failed. Just before half-time Solomon and Cassidy retired with injuries and were replaced by Dempsey and Tristram respectively. The spell was definitely in Waikato’s favour. Resuming, Wanganui again defended. From a melee near the line Russell flicked a pass to Read, who reversed to Dempsey, the last-named scoring. Wanganui retaliated and remained on the attack for the rest of the spell. Chase picked up in the loose, dummied and sent the rest of the rearguard into action, Burgess scoring and Welsh converting. In an attempt to ease the next attack. Russell kicked too shallow to Buick, who was beaten by the bounce. Burgess came up fast, stole the ball from Buick and scored. Barton, who was doing much useful work, then potted a goal from well out. Waikato rallied and gave Wanganui an anxious ten minutes on the line, but could find no gaps. A few minutes before time Wanganui beat off an attack, and from a scrum Brogden broke through and passed to Lockett, who scored, Welsh again converting. Mr. G. Thrush was the referee.
