Altering Classification of Main Highways WAIRARAPA JOTTINGS Dominion Special Service. Mastertoil, July 21. Questions of transport control were discussed briefly at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union. It was suggested by Mr. L. T. Daniell that a protest should be made against the policy of altering the classification of the Wel-lington-Napier and other main highways, with the effect of reducing the maximum permissible load from S tons to 61 tons. After discussion, the following motion was passed: “That this executive of the Farmers’ Union notes with surprise the suggestion to classify down the highway to our only port.” It was decided to support any action taken by the Masterton Chamber of Commerce to secure the installation of a weighbridge in Masterton. Messrs. J. M. James, C. C. Jackson, and L. T. Daniell were appointed to confer with and assist the chamber of commerce and other bodies in asking for the installation of a weighbridge. Warm appreciation was expressed at the invaluable service rendered by Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P., during his long term of office as Dominion president. Basis of Contribution.
Representatives of the Masterton and Castlepoint County Councils at a conference in Masterton yesterday discussed fully the question of the two bodies’ contribution to the Laugdale Bridge, and a basis of settlement was arrived at. The action is now to be confirmed at the meetings of the councils.
Table Tennis Representatives. The following will represent the Wairarapa Table Tennis Association in a match with the Hutt Valley representatives to be played in the Masterton Y.M.C.A. rooms ou Saturday:—Women: Misses L. Phelps (Parkvale), P. Harvey, R. Winter, Mrs. Harvey, Misses H. Winter, E. Masters (Winter Sports Club). Men: J. Nicholls, F. Bodie, R. Clarke (Winter Sports Club), H. Myers, N. Myers (Mauriceville), F. Jolly (Winter Sports Club). Reserves: Women, Misses M. McGovern (Mauriceville) and F. Masters (Winter Sports Club). Men, I. Coleman and G. Masters (Winter Sports Club).
Record Butterfat Pay-out. As a result of a very successful year, the Mauriceville Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., made a payment to suppliers yesterday which constituted a record for any one month of the company’s 38 years of co-operation. The bonus at rate of IJd. per lb. over the period from October Ito May 31, inclusive, amounted to £11,470/2/8, while the June supply at the rate of 1/- per lb. for finest totalled £2330/18/8, making a grand total of £13,801/1/4. It is expected 4hat a further bonus will be paid in August. Central School Affairs.
A meeting of the committee of the Masterton Central School Parents’ Association was held last night, when the treasurer reported a credit balance of £lO/13/6. It was decided to hold an old pupil?, parents, and friends’ dance on August 15. Mr. R. Frater stated that, because of his impending departure from Masterton, he would have to resign from the position of chairman. His resignation was accepted with regret, and Mr. G. Beecroft appointed chairman and trustee of the association.
Professional Wrestling. The Wairarapa Wrestling Association has been advised that Zahanas, who was to have wrestled Lofty Blomfield in the Masterton Municipal Hall on Thursday night, is now not available, and that his place has been taken by Rebel Russell. The latter is an ideal opponent for Blomfield, and can be relied upon to do his share toward providing an attractive contest.
Coursing Event. The Wairarapa Coursing Club will hold a meeting at the Akura Plumpton on Saturday next, when an open stake and a novice stake will be decided, both these events being limited to eight dogs. Mr. A. Ross will be judge and Mr. S. Geary dog-slipper. '
