MAKARA RATEPAYERS
■ Annual General Meeting
The annual general meeting of the Makara Ratepayers’ Association was held recently in the Makara Hall. There was a good attendance. The annual report, presented by the president, Mr. C- J. Duffy, summarised the chief business done by the association during the year, chief of which had been the problem of electric light and power for the district. The sub-committee set up to investigate the matter reported good progress. Other subjects of discussion were the reasons for the increase of rates and the suitability of metal for the traffic peculiar to Makara roads. The report said that the average attendance for the six general meetings was 22, which the chairman considered very satisfactory. The balance-sheet showed a substantial credit balance. During the meeting Crs. Purchase and Luxtou were invited to give reasons for the large debit balance in the riding account. This was dealt with in some detail. Votes of thanks to the president, and to the secretary, Mr. H. Watson, for services to the association during its initial year were passed with acclamation. The following officers were elected: President, Mr. C. J. Duffy; vice-presi-dent, Mr. J. Bowen; secretary, Mr. H. Watson: executive committee, Mr. F. Bailey, Mr. T. Cook, Mr. T. Hawkins, Mr. M. Prendeville, Mr. L. Monk, Mr. H. Gaskin; electric power sub-commit-tee, Messrs. C. J. Duffy, J. Bowen, S. Luxton, H. Watson.
