SCOPE FOR BETTER TRADE

New Zealand and Tasmania OFFICIAL STATISTICS The prediction that trade between Tasmania and New Zealand would be trebled within a year was made this week by the Minister of Agriculture in the Tasmanian Government. Hon. R. Cosgrove, who was recently in the Dominion discussing trade matters with the New Zealand Government. According to the latest figures available, the present balance of trade between tlie two countries is in favour of New Zealand.

In New Zealand statistics, no separate particulars are listed of trade between the Dominion and the several States of Australia. However, the Minister of Cgstoms, Hon. W. Nash, made available last night obtained by his department from an otl>cial Tasmanian publication. These show that for the year ended June 30, 1934, imports into Tasmania of goods of New Zealand origin were valued at £48.577, while exports from Tasmania to New Zealand totalled £26,100. Much more extensive trade has been 'carried out in past years. In 1929-30, the value of New Zealand imports into Tasmania was £161,562, and of Tasmanian exports ,to New Zealand, £39,173. Detailed figures for the year 1933-34 show that the principal exports from New Zealand were classed as live animals and animal and vegetable substances, valued at £40,933. Timber and manufactures of wood to a total value of £6136 were imported by the Dominion from Tasmania. Tlie possibility of developing and fostering export trade with Tasmania is indicated by the following quantities of goods at present imported by Tasmania from other sources, together with their values: — Butter, 535Gcwt., £31.899. Cheese, 1173ewt., £3925. Bacon and ham, 2263 cwt., £7997. Wool, 405,4741 b. from overseas, valued at £29,340, and 3,437,3281 b. from other Australian States, valued at £252,650. Coal. 64,466 tons, £66.939. Timber, 3,154,861 superficial feet, £42.056.

Tasmanian exports are principally goods of a kind produced in New Zealand, except for considerable mineral exports. '
