Farmers’ Union Suggestions By Telegraph—Press Association. Ashburton, May 29. The conference of the Mid-Canter-bury branch of the Farmers’ Union passed motions urging that tractors used exclusively for farming operations on the owner’s property be exempt front registration and taxation; advocating the abolit ion of the present motor registration and licenses, to bo replaced by a tax based on petrol consumption-: registration to lie cancelled only by "the wrecking of the vehicles or a breach of the law; number-plates to be for the life of the registration, third-party insurance being incorporated in the tax. tlie revenue required being assured on the consumption of petrol in tho previous year: advocating abolition of tlie heavy-duty license on farmers' trucks; that the rebate on petrol used in agricultural machinery lie increased to tlie total amount of tlie tax on imported petrols. Mr. S. 11. Lili was elected president.
