“SECOND TO NONE”

Wellington Electricity Department “I consider that the citizens of Wellington can look on the electricity department as one of the triumphs of an organisation civically owned, managed and controlled.” said the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, speaking last night at the private screening by the Wellington City Council's electricity department of films showing the development of electricity. “It was many years ago, in 1906, that the city took over the private company, and to-day. as a result of careful municipal management, the Wellington electricity department stands without superior as tin example of careful business control. In the early days it was decided by legislation that a certain sum should be set aside annually for renewals and reserves and the effect of this was to check anj- effort to dissipate a possilde surplus. As a result of that prudent step the people of Wei lington can now look on the department as second to none in the Southern Hemisphere for the cheap suppy of electricity for domestic consumption Its commercial product compares in price at least favourably with any other in New Zealand.” In conclusion, the Mayor commended the films as being not only interesting and instructive, but inspiring to all.
