IMPROVED POSITION

Less Assistance Needed By Returned Soldiers A considerable reduction in the amount of direct assistance it has been found necessary to grant to ex-service-men is recorded in the annual report of the Brooklyn Auxiliary Committee of the Wellington Returned Soldiers’ Association, to be presented at the annual meeting on June 4. "We are pleased to be able to report that there has been a considerable decline in the amount of direct assistance granted, the reason being that more work is offering and that the men are able to provide a greater amount of the necessaries of life out of their earnings,” says the report. "Whenever assistance is required a strict check up with other organisations Is made to prevent overlapping. Th's is done in Ihe case of local relief as well as in cases referred to W.R.S.A.. S.A.V.A., War Relief and Red Cross, with the result that cases referred to these organisations are always granted the assistance asked for, and we desire to place on record our deep appreciation of their confidence in us and the generous manner in which they grant assistance. We should also like to express our thanks to firms in the city, and to landlords of unemployed returned soldiers, for their generosity in the manner in which they have helped ns to handle this section of our activities.” Concern is expressed at the declining membership, however, the roll of financial members having decreased from 66 to 58 since last year, and, as there are 380 returned soldiers in tlie district, the association appeals to them for support.
