Galilee Wins Principal Flat Event JUMPING SURPRISES Windsor Lad a Dashing Fencer Dominion Special Service. ' Te Awamutu, May 17 A dull morning was followed by a sunny day for the winter meeting of the Waipa Racing Club. The track was heavy, but improved as the day advanced. There nas a good attendance, and the totalisator investments were £14,341, compared wjtn £8792 at the last winter meeting in 1934. and £16,202 for the summer meeting last December Outsider to Start. The improving Roxy scored in good style in the Hack Hurdles, and returned double figures on the win machine. Grand Score and Chief Lap reached the front quickly, and at the stands they were the leaders from Cordon, Modern Maid, Silver Wattle, Roxy and Sporting Song. Chief Lap moved out and lost his position at the .first fence along the back, where Grand Score was momentarily ■ft clear. Nearing the top Roxy moved .1, and a little further on Sporting Song ent up fast op the outside. Sporting ,ong and Roxy were together in front at the home turn from Grand Score, Cordon ami Modern Maid. Roxy gaiued u slight advantage at the lust fence and drew away to win by a length from Sporting Song, who defeated Lucidus by four lengths. Modern Maid was fourth, succeeded by Clan Ronald, Cordon and Xedcly Bov. Roxy recorded his best performance to date, and has more than flu outside chance in the Great Northerns. Sporting Song made a fine showing, although J. JIMcßae had to ride him very hard. Lueidtis was closer at the finish (han at any other stage. Finished Resolutely. Tlie each-way favourite Cyllaros scored in the Trial Handicap. Glenation jumped out smartly and wa.s joined after going about a furlong by Little Ruse, who had ran up quickly after being a trifle slow to move. Little Ruse led into the straigJt from Cyllaros, Glenation, Stormy Weather and Ruaville. Coining round the turn Little Ruse left the rails and Cyllaros challenged on the rails to beat him near the end by three-parts of a length. Johnny Walls was running on at the finish to get third, a length and a half away, ami Ru'tvillo was fourth, followed by Glenation and Glenthnwn. Cyllaros ran on resolutely, but Little Ruse might have won only for leaving the . fence. Dashing Fencer. Another win dividend oi double figures was returned when Windsor Lad won the W. G. Necks separated the placed horses in a fine finish in the Woodstock Stakes, m which Galilee emerged triumphant. lee ran to the load quickly and was joined at the end of a couple of furlongs by M ahine Roihi. with Velocipede and Sinking Fund handy. Galilee and Wahine Roihi carried on the running, and was first into the straight from Sinking Fund. Bonny Gay and Velocipede. Galilee fought on valiantly under pressure, and won from Velocipede, who came on the rails to beat Sinking Fund for second. Gay Rose was fourth, followed by Bonny Gay and Tuaheahe. It was Galileo's first success at a middle distance, ami she was in her dement on her home course. Sinking Fiino and Velocipede run solid races, and Gay Rose was closer at the finish than at any other stage. Sound Performance. The three-year-old Matoru scored narrowly in the Arapuni Handicap. Black Thread jumped out cleanly and led early from Mangukahn. Lionheart, Matoru and Chikara. Nearing the turn Matoru assumed the lead, and be was first into the straight from Black Thread. Lady Ruler. Dark Shadow and Leo Colossus. .Matoru ran on strongly and won by half a length from the fast-finisli-in"- High Ten. who defeated Black Thread br'a head. Gay Sister finished well to get fourth, ahead of Dark Shadow. Mangukaha. and Leo Colossus. Matoru registered a sound performance.’ High Tea came from a long way back and appeared to be a shade unlucky. Woodful as Hurdler. Dashingly ridden by A. McGregor. Woodful was responsible for n mild surprise in winning the Orakei Hurdles. Lucidus led. but Woodful lumped to the front at the first fence. Moodful then went on to set a solid pace, wi n Tjucidus in close attendance nnd Huskie heading the others, who wore strung out Six furlongs from home there was little between Woodful and Lucidus. The former. however, was jumping the faster and cleaner, nnd in the end he won by five lengths from Lucidus. Arctic Stnr ran on from the roar to be another fire lengths nwav third, and Huskie was fourth Woodful was kicked risht out nt the finish, but registered a solid performance Lucidus ran his best race as a hurdler, nnd Arctic Star wns running onKnniipn unseated his rider at the first fence, whore he made a very poor jump. Improved Three-year-old. The three-year-old Sergia registered n smooth performance in winning the Hatrini Handicap. Full o’ Scotch led early, and then gave wav to Gnv Sister and Barograph. Excellent progress is being made by the canvassers for members of the Dannevirke Jockey Club, and the provisional secretary, Mr. L. G.'Nelson, considers that the requisite number of <5OO has alread) been obtained. He has 250 members O’i, the books at the office, and as yet only one or two subscription lists have been returned. Other lists are expected in the near future. Pollutions have been offered in numerous cases. Messrs. John Dewar nnd Sons have promised a cup or a canteen of cutlery for the principal race of the first meeting.
