STEEPLE SURPRISE

Keen Contests at Marton SUCCESS FOR GAY BOY Totalisator Increase (By The Watcher.) The finishes at the winter meeting of the Marton Jockey Club, held on Saturday, were nearly all very keenly contested, with small winning margins, and in the main form was well to the fore, but in the steeplechase event there was a big surprise when Croyden won. The principal flat event was won by the Foxton representative Gay Boy, who incidentally beat another Foxton horse in Jubilee Song, and the Crofton Hack Cup. was won by Hunting Queen. In addition to winning with Gay Boy. the stable of J. Proctor was also successful in the maiden race with Garter Red B. H. Morris rode two winners. Hunting Queen and Mata Mari. Two handsome trophies were competed fot during the day, and they were both won by the Duncan family. That for the gentleman riders’ race was won by Mr. K. McK. Dunean on his own horse Taillight, and Mr. T A. Duncan won Messrs. Walker and Hall’s trophy with Hunting Queen in the Crofton Handicap. The weather was overcast, but fine ana mild, and the track was in excellent order for this time of the year. The attendance was very satisfactory, and the totalisator. operating on win and place, wjth the place machine paying only two dividends (75-25) hand’"d £6686 for seven races, as against £5673/10/1 for eight races last year, an increase of £lOl2/10/-. With rare exceptions the difference in the winner's price on this system of betting is practically negligible, and it seems hnrdly worth the trouble and cost of going beyond the single pool, except for proper win and place. Favourite’s Poor Display. Brigadore badly disappointed his supporters in the hurdles. He went well for just on a mile, but on being asked to go to the leader, Royal King, he put up a feeble effort, and only just managed to scrape home against Knoln for second, after the latter had nearly lost his rider at the first fence, causing him to drop right back. , , Brigadore’s showing was too bad to oe true, and he was in a bad way after the race with kidney trouble. Considering the condition he was in he put up a game race. Lucullus Lad Unlucky. Lucullus Lad, favourite for the Trial Plate, got out with the leaders from No. 1 but was allowed to drift buck, and at the turn where Ruenzori anti Peopk * Idol led from Garter Red. Trevelyn Ho d. Brioni. Hunting Lad and Trimden the favourite was six or eight lengths from the front. Ruenzori led into the straigh . where Garter Red moved forward and later Lucullus Lad put in a claim. Garter Red worsted Ruenzori just short ot the post, while Lucullus Lad just failed to reach both of them. HMris trio were several lengths clear of the field, in which Trevelyn Hold, Trimden and. Princess La Jean wore the most prominent. ‘There is not the least doubt that Lucullus Lad was very unlucky. Kept up to his work he must have won. Garter Red has been a long time trying in the class and his turn was overdue, but on the whole the form was not nnpressive. People s Idol, a bkdy-lookin n novice, half-brother by Laughing Prince to Ethiop. showed speed and promise. Riding Skill Prevails. Taillight won the gentlemen riders’ race well at the finish, after he had got a lucky run through on the rails entering the straight. The favourite, Clarion Call and Prince Reno, made the pace from Taillight. Vivienne and Cometra. Cometra ran up to the two leaders entering the straight, and they went very wide, presenting Taillight with an opportunity too good to be missed. He came through and eventually won well from Cometra, who was able to head Clar'on Call, Vivienne and Prince Reno were next. Riding tactics had a good deal to do with the result, but Taillight won decisively. Cometra ran over a lot of extra ground, and Clarion Call was not disgraced under his weight. Prince Reno looked likely for a mile, but then weakened. A Solid Performance. Gay Boy was responsible for a very solid performance in winning the 5V inter Stakes. Last but one (Peter .Tacksoul to leave the barrier, he was a long way back when the field settled down, but despite running outside everything on the home turn and being out extremely wide entering the straight, his finishing run was overwhelming. Ethiop was first out. but gave way early to Land Tax and Miss Hushabye. others prominent in the leading bunch being Farmer. Jubilee Song. Dmtomous and Slippery. The field bunched on the turn except Mother Superior and Peter Jackson, Gay Boy sweeping up very fast on. the outer. Farmer. Ethiop and Jubilee Song were doing best in front at the last furlong, hut Gay Boy. continued his run. and finally he and Jubilee Song drew out n little from the others. A bumping finish saw Gay Boy win very narrowly, but at the same time decisively. Farmer, who had a good run on the rails, was a elose third, and Ethiop hnndy. then Diatomous. Hunting Lodge, Lapel and Slippery. Gay Boy maintained the improvement he displayed at Woodville and his effort was impressive. Jubilee Song ran well, but was weakening nt the fiirsb Former and Ethiop ran good races, and ought to improve, but the favourites. Slippery nnd Lapel, were never likely. Mother Superior showed no dash at all. Surprise in Steeples. The local candidate Croyden brought off a big surprise in the steeplechase, but he won on his merits. The favourites. Manawatu and Dome, never flattered, the former jumping bn«lly and being beaten early, while Dozie. a long way out of it early, did make up some ground at the finish, though never being within striking distance. Croyden was always one of the leaders and after 11l iwarra had broken his gear, and Indefinite had run off, Tangled gave Croyden most trouble. Tangled was beaten two fences from home, when Taura Lad then moved forward. Taura Lad put up a good effort, but Croyden field him -safely at the finish. Battleground, who had begun to look likely on the last circuit, weakened again over the last three fences, but he managed to beat Tangled for third money. Sir Ronald fell. The winner paid on toward a niarter of a century. He proved more forward than expected. Taura Lad is improving. Manawatu and Dozie ran very poor races. Battleground put up a creditable effort. Hunting Queen Again. Hunting Queen gave further evidence of her improvement, and liking for a journey by winning the Hack Cup decisively. She was always handy to the lenders, Donegal and Corowa, and as the field

I bunched entering the straight she came ! through to the lead. Reipar appeared ou the scene at the finish with a strong run, and Hunting Queen had to be shaken up to stall him off. Corowa was a poor third, followed by Donegal and Wnipiro, with Chile last. The winner’s performance was only up to expectations after her Hawera form, but she paid a good price. Reipar ran one of his infrequent good races and would have bad the winner in trouble with a little further to go. Donegal raced below his best, while Chile, after briefly flattering on the turn, where he ran up alongside the winner, put up a very weak finish A Close Finish. Mata Hari, who divided favouritism in the concluding event with De Trop, won narrowly at the finish from Happy Hunting. Joviality began best, but was soon joined by Sir Tommy, then De Trop, clear of the others. Mata Hari moved up on the turn, having had some ground to make I up. and she was challenging the leaders as they straightened up. She soon "had their measure but over the last bit Happy Hunting came fast, and B. 11. Morris had to call upon all his mount had got to get her home by inches. Sir Tommy was a poor third, and De Trop fourth, with Midacre next. Mata Hari is a smart hack, our she owes a lot on this occasion to her ’id er, as she also did at her last start at Woodville, Sir Tommy and Joviality failed to stay. The latter's form is not very encouraging. De Trop did not race so well as at Egmont. Details of the Racing OPEN HURDLES, of £110; second £’ third £5 About one mile and half. 3 J. Duggan's ch. g.
