SILVER STREAK

Outstanding Performance At Ashburton SPRINT TO EMISSARY Dominion Special Service. Ashburton, May 16. The Ashburton County Racing Club’s autumn meeting was held to-day in warm, hazy weather; the track was in excellent order. There was a goou attendance and the totalisator investments were £9872 10/-, against £6464 for seven events last year. Solwit’s Hurdles. Solwit and Wexford Bridge shared favouritism in the Longbeach Hurdles, and the former had a decisive win, while Wexford Bridge jeopardised his chance by whipping round when the barrier lifted and losing several lengths. Solwit went away with the lead and piloted Pahu and Colossian into the back. Wexford Bridge here commenced a fast move, and was in second place to Solwit going across the top with a gap to Colossian and Pahu. Solwit maintained a Jwo-lengths’ advantage from Wexford Bridge to the last fence, where the latter weakened and Pahu displaced him. Pahu finished on solidly, but Solwit. although kept up to his task, had a clear length to spare at the post. Wexford Bridge was a moderate third, with a big gap to Colossian. Haeretonu. always well back, ran off at the last fence. Solwit had a well-deserved and popular win. He gave an excellent display and showed more place than his opponents. Pahu executed an impressive finishing effort and would have caused the winner more trouble with a little further to go. Wexford Bridge shaped well for a horse making his first appearance in public. Ho gave the others about 10 lengths start and then narrowly missed unseating his rider at the second fence, entailing a further loss of ground. He was then set a severe ordeal in making up leeway, nnd it was not surprising to find him beaten a good way from ,onie. Colossinn and Haeretonu were never >yA Speedy Hack. Investors were again correct in summing up the field for the Eiffelton Hack Handicap, the favourite. Ponty, scoring a decisive win from the second choice, Silver Sail, with the third favourite. Roaming, in third place. Silver Sail and Honour's I,ass raced abreast in front from the start, with Ponty. Convivial, Universe, and Roaming handy. Silver Sail shook off Honour’s Lass as soon as the straight was entered, and was then tackled by Ponty, who gradually overhauled her and beat her with ease by over a length. Roaming hung on to get third money two lengths from Rotokiuo, who headed Colombo on the post. There was never'any doubt about the result once Ponty drew alongside Silver Sail. Roaming ran a sound race, while Rotokino, who bolted a few furlongs, before the race, did well to get up into fourth place. The disappointments of the field were Colombo nnd Honour’s Lass. A. Sibbritt was to have ridden Rose of Tralee, but while waiting at the barrier he became suddenly ill through a bump he received when riding Pahu in the hurdle event, and he was brougnt hack to the enclosure. M. Kirwan taking the- mount. A Spectacular Success. Silver Streak was responsible for an outstanding performance in the Autumn* Handicap. Carrying top weight and cutting out a mile and a quarter in 2.4 he outstayed Argentic in the long run home and won in a convincing manner. Al] got away in line, but at the end of a furlong Grand Review and Cranford had sorb'd themselves out and were fully eight lengths in front, through the back stretch from Moonbeam. Argentic, Nightform, Golden Dart, and Silver Streak with Lady Graceful and Polydora in the rear. Grand Review was in trouble haif a mile from home, and Cranford wns also weakening, allowing Jloonbeam to head him off turning for home, with Argentic, Golden Dart. Lady Graceful, and Silver Streak handy. Argentic had charge a furion” from home and then Silver Streak nut in his claim. Ridden confidently, tne top weight gradually got Argentic s measure ami bent him by a length. Golden Dart was a fair third, two Inncths >n front of Lady Graceful. Nightform. Moonbeam, nnd Polydora were next, wi.h Grand Review and Cranford tailed off. Silver Streak had no trouble in mas-

tcring the distance, and his rider was not actually called upon for any special effort. Argentic ran his best race lor a while, and Golden Dart indicated by bis third placing that a middle distance is not beyond him. Lady Graceful, although in fourth place at the post, was again disappointing ami Polydora also failed to make the improvement expected after her race at Amberley. Owner’s First Win. The Trial Stakes, I'm- non-winners, provided a good race and a close finish. Investors made Cyrillian a good favourite, and she recorded the first win for Mr. H. D. Greenwood's colours. Culotte showed out when the field settled down from Cyrillian. Hodeur, Passenger, Chief Lama, and .Sir Hugh. Culotte was the first to enter the straight, and looked a likely winner until Cyrillian drew up to her inside the distance, while Chief Lama made a promising move from the middle of the field. A hard tussle ensued, Cyrillian staying on the best to win by half a length from Chief Lama, who beat Calotte in the last stride. Hodeur was two lengths away, in front of lied Dragoon, .with Countervane and Sir Hugh next. Never in Doubt. Willie Win outclassed a somewhat weak field in the Fairfield Hack Handicap, but the manner in which he accomplished the success stamped him as one of the best young hacks at present in commission at Biccarton. Colleen Ougue rushed away with a big lead from Madge s Coin, with Willie "Win, Madam Pompadour, Execution, Wonderful and Last Befrain following at intervals. Willie Win moved up rounding the home turn, ami was in second place to Colleen Ougue entering the straight. The leader did not last long, and Execution and then Last Befrain essayed challenges to Willie Win, but neither could make any impression, and the favourite was being eased up at the post, Last Befrain comfortably beating Execution for second money.' Colleen Ougue was three lengths away, in front of Madam Pompadour, Madge’s Coin and Wonderful. Willie Win justified his short price by the easiest win of the day. He has only had three races for two wins and a second placing. Emissary Decisively. Emissary was sent out a good first choice for the Flying Handicap, and again investors showed sound judgment, as he had a decisive success. He began smartly and except that Great Star ran up alongside him during the middle stages he was in the van throughout. He was followed into the straight by Great Star, Bebel Chief, Capital and Epris, and it •was left to the last-named to chase the winner home, but although he finished resolutely he had no chance of getting up. Great Star was a fair third, clear of Capital, who just headed Bebel Chief, with Variant last. Emissary was always ft ■winner, but probably would not have gone much further. Epris showed a pleasing return to form, while Great Star indicated that he is not yet a spent force. Capital and Bebel Chief did not race up to expectations, while Variant made a poor showing.
