Shorter Hours For Nurses
Sir, —x; ow that the Government has introduced the 40-hotir week, I should like to say a word in favour of shorter hours for nurses and attendants working in mental hospitals. In the interests of their health, both mental and physical, they should not have to work longer than eight hours at a stretch. I think I am correct in stating that these Government employees work much longer hours than any others in the Public Service. In England they have the eight-hour shift, so why not iu New Zealand? At present the hours on duty are as from 6.30 a.m. until 8 p.m. and alternate days until 5.30 p.m. If the Government would immediately adopt this scheme, so far as mental hospitals are concerned, then many suitable men and women at present unemployed would benefit, as would also the present staff of nurses and attendants. —I am. etc., all-day duty. Christchurch. May 16.
