Alby, 7.7, should be included in the list of acceptors for the Woodstock Stakes. A series of misunderstandings led to the omission of Alby and it was not noticed until after the official race card had been published. It appears that Alby was nominated, but iu transmission the name came through as Alloy. The handicapper weighted Alloy, but when the list of acceptances reached Gisborne W. Goeeomb, trainer of Alby, wired asking what weight his horse had received, adding that he had already telegraphed accepting for him. The club officials replied that Alby had not been nominated and therefore could not be accepted for. The owner and trainer both contended that their horse had been nominated in the proper way, and it was then found that Alby had been mistaken for Alloy. Steps were immediately taken to advise all parties concerned, and the handicapper weighted Alby at 7.7. Riding engagements include: J. Muir, Windsor Lad, Friendly Boy and Count Roussillon; J. ST. SIMON Story of His Purchase The Duke of Portland has written his experiences of the turf and the hunting field under the title "Memories of Racing and Hunting.” The racing chapters are dedicated to his trainer, "Dear old Mat. Dawson,” as he rails him, “who not only helped me to become the owner of St. Simon but, by his sage advice and sound judgment, laid the foundation of my long career on the turf." Dealing with the purchase of St. Simon, when sent up for sale after the death of Prince Batthyany of Hungary, the duke writes: “1 asked Matthew Dawson’s advice as to buying Ftilmen, which had been a prominent two-year-old. but had not run an a three-year-old, owing to the prince’s death. Mat accompanied me to the stables to inspect the horses, and we thought Ftilmen a very nice animal. He then proposed we should look at the others, aj)d in the next box we found a brown two-year-old colt called St. Simon. Mat remarked (and I agreed) : ‘This io quite a likely looking animal.' We noticed a hock had been dressed with some white substance. I asked Mtit if he thought it was a curb. He passed his hand over the place and said he did not think (here was anything that mattered. The next morning Mat accompanied me Io the sale. Ftilmen was knocked down at 500gns'. in exeesw of my bid, very fortunately for me, as it turned out. St. Simon was' then led into the ring, and Mat asked me how much he should bid. I replied. ‘Go on and I will tell you when to stop.’ The result was the horse became mine at ICOOgns.” That is how the Duke of Portland became the owner of the greatest racehorse and sire of the nineteenth century. It wan the Duke of Portland who purchased Carbine and established him as a successful sire in England.
