MARTON FIELDS

Winter Stakes and Steeplechase PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW (By The Watcheb.) With the exception of the hurdle race, in which only three paid up, satisfactory fields will parade, at Marton to-morrow. The track is in good winter order. The club has decided to adhere to its New Year system of betting, win, and 75-25. Poor Hurdles Field. Brigadore is assured of solid favouritism in the hurdle race, though Kaola must be considered. The Maiden. As usual in the present-day maiden events the field in the Trial Plate offers little encouragement to backers to make a sound favourite. Lucullus Lad appeals on his New Year form at Stratford, though he has not had much public experience. Gentlemen Riders. Clarion Call has a solid weight in the Ladies’ Necklace, for gentlemen riders, but he should make a showing. Cometra may be dangerous if she improves on her Dannevirke form. An Open Race. There is a good geld in the Winter Stakes, and form is complicated by the appearance of several fresh horses. Diatomous has never been at his best in soft ground, and the distance also may trouble him. Slippery will be backed on his running at Hawera. Peter Jackson is improving, but seven furlongs looks too short for him. Farmer and Mother Superior are a couple of very likely candidates. though they will be fresh. Ethiop, Lapel, Jubilee Soug, Gay Boy, and Miss Hushabye all look possibles. It is not an easy race for backers, but on form Slippery and Gay Boy should not lack support. Over the Country. The steeplechase field is not a Strong one, and although the top pair, Manawatu and Dozie, are without recent racing, they have been hunted and should be hard to beat. Gaswyn and Battleground are winners over hurdles, so should be respected. while Taura Lad made a bit of a showing at his recent start. Hacks in Form. ' With Hunting Queen in the field for the Crofton Hack Cup backers are likely to seize upon her form as the best and she should run well. Waipiro, however, meets her several pounds better, and looks a good prospect, as also do Chile and Donegal. Chile was unlucky at Feilding. Reipar will have to improve, but he is the sort to do his best one of these days. Smart Beginners. Mata Hari and De Trop are the outstanding form horses in the Farewell Hack, but Sir Tommy and Joviality are possibles to improve on their Hawera running, while Middle may also be found running prominently.
