Protests of Settlers WAIRARAPA NEWS Dominion Special Service. Masterton, January 22. At a meeting of settlers from Kahutara, Pukio, and Pahautea in Carterton, the attitude of the Featherston County Council to proposed assistance toward the cost of repairing the breaks in the Kahutara stopbank was discussed. Mr, B. Roberts, M.P. for Wairarapa, was present. The reasons for which it was considered that a protest should be made against the action of the Kahutara River Board in seeking assistance from the council to the detriment, it was alleged,, of county ratepayers, were placed before him. Mr. Roberts was asked to place the facts before the Minister of Public Works and the Minister of Transport, with a view’ to having any application from the Kahutara River Board or Featherston County Council for assistance to repair the damaged bank held up until the settlers’ side of the case had been heard. Pilot at Aerodrome. Flying solo, Mr. C. A. Dickens arrived at the Hood Aerodrome this morning, from Palmerston North and Wanganui. Mr. Dickens departed on the return journey, completing the round trip, this afternoon. , To Stop at Mastertoll. Fifteen West Australian primary producers, who are now touring the Dominion, are to make a brief halt in Wai.rarapa on Thursday, when they will visit Sir "William Perry’s, property at “Penrose,” and inspect his stud flock. The travellers will then go to Hawke’s Bay. Donations Acknowledged. The Mayor of Masterton., Mr. T. Jordan, acknowledges a donation of £2/2/0 to the Cancer Research Fund from the Mauriceville-Ihuraua branch of the Woraen’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Mr. Jordan also acknowledges a donation of £l/4/3 to the Mayor’s relief fttnd from the Masterton Methodist Church circuit. Camping Popular. At Hawley motor park 30 permits for SO campers were issued during December, while the sum of £5/8/- in fees was paid to the town clerk. Unfortunately . the weather was not good during the holiday period., but many parties made use of the facilities at the camping ground, as many a« nine tents being pitched on one occasion. From Boxing Day onward campers came ami went in twos and threes, ami right up until about 10 days ago there were still a few parlies at the park.
Rille Shooting. Members of the Featherston Defence Rifle Club conducted a shoot over 300 and 000 yards ranges recently, the scores being counted for the Williams and Bidwill Cups.
