London STEPS TO STRENGTHEN NAVY By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright London, January 13. The “Sun-Herald” news agency says that Empire defence, including precautions in the Mediterranean, the Naval Conference, Air Force expansion, and Navy rebuilding, were discussed at a meeting of Government experts today. The Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Baldwin, presided, and Mr. Neville Chamberlain, Jlr. Anthony Eden, the Defence Jlinisters, and the Chiefs of Staff of all services attended. The "Sun-Herald” agency understands; that naval estimates shortly to be presented to Parliament will provide in addition to presept commitments, for several new cruisers and destroyers, and two new battleships to replace battleships which have reached the age limit under the Washington Treaty. The agency adds that meanwhile several of Britain’s most famous ships are to be reconstructed or are being reconstructed with new armour and the most modern fittings and guns, making them as formidable as anything iu the world.
