INNINGS VICTORY

Australian Cricket Team

O’REILLY BOWLS WELL

(Received January 15, 12.40 a.m.)

East London, January 14

The Australian cricketers defeated Border by an innings and 14 runs. Today Border carried their over-night score of 67 for seven wickets to 128 before the last wicket fell, but failed to avert an innings defeat. The local side was facing an innings defeat when stumps were drawn at the end of the second day’s play yesterday. Australia’s innings was declared closed at 351 for nine wickets, McCabe and Chipperfield having scored centuries, and Border had scored only 67 for the loss of seven wickets in their second innings when play ended for the day.

When play was resumed yesterday morning Australia had 96 runs on the board with the opening pair, McCabe 56 and Fingleton 31, still together. McCabe batted with his usual dashing brilliance, his accurate drives reducing a good-length attack to impotence. He became reckless after reaching his century.

At the luncheon adjournment Border’s first-innings score of 209 had been equalled for the loss of three wickets, Chipperfield being 24 not out. Richardson, who continues to show poor form, had two lives before be was dismissed. Chipperfield collected runs off almost, every ball and reached his century in 126 minutes. He hit 10 boundaries.

Darling and Sievers both gave bright displays. Fleetwood-Smith has an injured hand and'did not bat or field.

The Border batsmen attempted to hit O’Reilly, but were unable to overcome his leg-trap. Sievers bowled with great heart. To-day O'Brien took his first South African wicket when Richardson caught Jlandy off his bowling. Morkel used the long handle to advantage, taking 18, including four fours, off one over from O’Brien. Jlorkel altogether scored six fours, and the last wicket partnership added 55 runs in little over half an hour. Details:— BORDER. First innings - U ' J Second Innings. S. White, c. -McCabe, b.
