BEST SEASON SO FAR

Cricket Association’s Annual Report

Activities of the Hutt Valley Cricket Association have been very satisfactory, and the past season could be regarded as the most successful since the club’s inception, states the annual report of the association to be presented at the annual meeting on September 9. With an increase of eight teams in the field the class of cricket showed a marked improvement, and this could be attributed to the wickets generally improving and the formation of an umpires’ association. The umpires' association, realising it had a hard row to hoe, did yeoman service throughout the strenuous season, and, says the report, its efforts were appreciated by all, and marked another successful stage of prosperous advancement in the history of the association. Twenty-four teams affiliated, and were divided into two sections of 12 each, and the successful teams. Gear in the A grade, and Gracefield in the B grade, were to be congratulated on their splendid performances.

Four representative matches were played during the season, the opposing teams being the Wellington Mercantile League, the Hutt club, and the Porirua Mental Hospital club (twice). Although the Hutt Valiev renresentatives did not.

register any wins, their performances could be regarded as highly satisfactory. The selectors were handicapped on account of many prominent players being on vacation.

Concerning grounds the report says this was becoming an intense problem with the increase of teams each year, and the past season’s committee had devoted considerable time debating ways and means of procuring suitable grounds. The balance-sheet showed that the season’s workings had been very satisfactory, considering that the main revenue-producing ground, North Park, was not available until the New \ear. Expenditure had been exceedingly heavy, but a favourable credit balance was shown nevertheless. BRIGHT PROSPECTS Future of Western Hutt Tennis Club

“Our teams were not as successful in the inter-club competitions as in previous years, this no doubt being due to our having lost a few of our leading players, but the prospects for the coming season are exceptionally bright,” states the report of the Western Hutt Tennis Club to be presented at the annual meeting.

There was always a good attendance of members at the courts, despite the hot weather, says the report, which adds that the financial position of the club was stronger now than it had been for a number of yearsj thanks to the efforts of the committee in keeping down expenditure to a minimum. It had been decided to have one of the courts top-dressed and various improvements made before the opening of next season, which, says the report, would be a successful one.

Philately has become a popular hobby among children in Lower Hutt, and a bookseller stated yesterday that boys from the high school and several of the primary schools were seeking additions to their albums every day. Furthermore the stamps were not bought haphazardly, for the boys were keen buyers and always spent a considerable amount of time looking through the stock.
