YEAR OF PROGRESS

Horticultural Society Anticipation of greater progress in the future in view of the increasing activities ■of the society and the gradual brightening of the financial aspect in general was expressed at the annual meeting of the Butt Valley Horticultural Society last night. The president, Mr. D. S. Patrick, presided over an attendance of about 60'members. . The annual report stated that the receipts for the year amounted to £398/10/6 and the expenditure to £3Bl/16/1, which showed a credit balance of £2O/19/3. Subscriptions amounted to £139/15/6,' as against £134/2/6 for the previous year. The balance of assets amounted to £742/3/1. ' A wet spring and a very hot, dry summer made the season phenomenal, continued the report Spring, summer and autumn shows were held, but the midsummer show was cancelled because of the hot and dry season. The summer show wah the most meritorious rose show ever staged in'the Hutt Valley, the quality and colour of the blooms, together with record entries, making the show a wonderful display. . The following officers were elected for the coming year:—Patrons, Lord and Lady Galway; president, Air. D. S. Patrick vice-presidents, same as last year With the. addition of Dr. F. Bolt and Air. C. C. Odlin ; general committee, same as last year with the addition of Messrs. D. G. Taylor, P. A. Plumer and V. Wakeham; women’s committee, same as last year; secretary, Air. A. J. Nicholls; treasurer. Mr. H. J. Poole; auditor, Air. IV. G. Alexander.
