Ministerial. The Hon. Sir Alfred Ransom, ActingPrime Minister, continues to make progress in recovery from illness. Yesterday he was able to leave his bed for an hour. It is expected that lie will be able to resume his duties toward the end of this, week.

The Hon. J. G. Cobbe, Minister of Defence, returned yesterday from Levin.

The Hon. R. Masters, Minister of Industries and Commerce, returned from Stratford last evening. The Hon. J. Bitchener, Minister of Public Works, who represented the Government at the funeral of Mrs. E. McCombs, who was Labour M.l’. for Lyttelton, will return from Christchurch this morning. The Hon. Sir Alexander Young Minister of Health, after a hurried visit to Auckland, returned to Wellington yesterday.

Professor F. Gordon Bell, of the chair of surgery in the University of Otago, Dunedin, accompanied by Mrs. Bell, returned to New Zealand yesterday by the Makura from Sydney after a visit to Great Britain.

Major L. G. Goss, New Zealand Staff Corps, who has been on exchange duty in Australia, arrived back by the Makura from Sydney yesterday. He was accompanied by Mrs. Goss and their daughter. The Rev. Dr. J. H. M. Dabb, 8.A., a minister of the Church of Scotland, will arrive at Wellington to-morrow, and will leave by the Monowai on Friday. While iu Wellington Dr. Dabb will be the guest of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Greenberg, Karori. He will attend the luncheon of the Optimists Club on Thursday,' and will address various Y.M.C.A. meetings. Mr. W. V. Watson left Wellington last evening for the north. Mr. N. I. Curtis returned to Wellington yesterday by the Makura from Sydney.

Mr. J. W. McLean, chief postmaster, Wellington, was a passenger for the south last evening.

Mr. L. C. Tatton, of the Texas Company (Australasia), Limited, travelled south last evening from Wellington. Mr. R. L. Grant, New Zealand representative of British Empire Films, left Wellington last evening for Auckland. The Rev. H. F. Wilson, vicar of Paraparaumu, has been appointed vicar of Pahlatua.

Mr. W. F. Soper, of Christchurch, and Mrs. Soper were passengers by the Makura from Sydney yesterday.

Mr. George Wright, managing director of Farmer’s, Ltd., Sydney, arrived at Wellington by the Makura from Sydney yesterday. Mr. L. N. Denby, of the passenger department of the Union Steam Ship Company at Wellington, returned yesterday from Sydney by the Makura.

Mr. L. Martin, a business man of Calcutta, is a through passenger to Tahiti by the Makura, which arrived yesterday from Sydney. Dr. G. F. V. Anson and Mr. E. J. C. Wiffin, of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, left last evening for the south.

Mr. C. M. Turrell, general manager for New Zealand of the New Zealand Shipping Company, left Wellington last evening for the south. Mr. C. N. Cathie, of Wellington, who has been on a holiday visit to Australia, returned yesterday, with Miss A. G. Cathie, by the Makura. Mr. C. W. Wentworth, a member of the staff of the Premier of New South Wales, is a through passenger to San Francisco by the Makura, which arrived yesterday from Sydney. Mr. W. Hustler Smith, president of the Wellington Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association, returned, with Mrs. Smith, from Sydney by the Makura yesterday. Mr. John Corder, chairman of the Waimea County Council, was yesterday elected chairman of the Cawthron Institute Trust Board, says a Press Association message. Mr. A. Morzer-Bruyns, representative of the K.P.M. Line (Royal Packet Navigation Company) on the island of Ball, Java, Is a through passenger to San Francisco bj' the Makura, which arrived yesterday from Sydney.

Mr. D. Jones, a member of the Executive Commission of Agriculture, will visit Palmerston North to-morrow to attend a gathering of the Massey Agricultural College Old Students’ Association. Mr. Frank Derry, one of the leading movers in the Y.M.C.A. in Britain, is due to arrive by the Monowal about June 29 at Wellington. Mr. Derry is vice-president of the National Council of I lie Y.M.C.A. in England, and president of the Commercial Travellers’ Christian Association of England.
