LOCAL MARKETING OF BUTTER

Dairy Board’s Impressions

PROBLEM VARIES DISTRICT BY DISTRICT

Dairy Board members returned to Wellington at the week-end, after taking evidence on the question of the local marketing of butter in Christchurch and Dunedin. They state that a great deal of useful evidence was tendered in each place, and the point which emerged most clearly from the contact with leaders of the industry in the South Island was that the problem varied from district to district. The board, as a result of the evidence placed before it, was glad of its decision to take evidence in each of the four main centres, “for it is quite on the cards that the problems in the North Island will again be different from those outlined in the south.”

Very complete evidence was tendered by all factories. At Christchurch evidence was given by the Westland factories, who appeared before the board as a group, as did also t(je Nelson and Marlborough factories. Canterbury factories gave- evidence Individually, directors, secretaries and managers in each case meeting the board and running over all aspects of the problem, and in Otago also, individual factories gave evidence. Tile board is to take local marketing evidence in Auckland on June 24 and 25, and in Wellington on July 3 and 4. Following on the Wellington evidence, the board will hold its regular meeting, but some little time will have to elapse for sifting and collating the evidence before the board tackles the major problem of bringing down a scheme which will overcome those practices which have led to widespread dissatisfaction throughout the industry.
