A HARD GAME
Oriental Pack Worries Petone
Maintaining a lead throughout the game, Oriental defeated Petone at the Petone Recreation Ground by nine points to six. Brown and Searle scored for Oriental, and Turnbull kicked a penalty, and for Petone Uleland. scored and Ashton kicked a penalty. All Petone’s points came in the closing stages of the second spell, and were won iby dint of hard effort. In the first spell Petone were penned in their own territory, and their few attacks lacked the finishing sting. There was practically no concerted play by Petone, and on very few occasions did they give Oriental any anxious moments. Both the backs and forwards were off form, but both brightened considerably toward the end of the game. In particular, the passing among the Petone backs was weak, and many opportunities went begging. On the other hand, the Oriental forwards kept Petone worried by their relentless pressing. They were very fast, and packed quickly, especially in the line-outs. Any opening was speedily snapped up, and once on the attack they were hard to stem. Most of the scrums went to Petone, who were unable to do anything when they got the ball. Mr. B. Matthews was referee.
