OUTSIDERS WIN

Opening Day at Dunedin GRABALL’S STEEPLE Chief Flat Event to Amy Johnson Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, June 1The Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting opened in fine weather to-day and attracted a fairly good attendance. The going was sticky aud holding and could be held responsible for some big dividends. In fact, the holding nature of the going tended to restrict betting, but despite some small fields the returns from the totalisator were better than what might have been expected. The investments totalled £11,779 against £12,020/10/- on the first day last year. Forty-lengths’ Win. Graball and Snowy Dawn dropped out of the Tahuna Steeplechase. Red Lance started favourite and good support came for Parasang and Reminder. The field fenced well until Velvet unshipped his rider at the fence at the homo turn, and cannoning into Parasang nearly knocked the latter's rider out of the saddle. High Speed dropped his rider at the post and rails on the hill. Parasang, Reminder, and Red Lance were then running along in front of Prince Tractor. Parasang led over the double but slipped and crashed into the post and rails half a mile from home. This left Reminder in charge, and he came on to win by about 40 lengths from Red Lance, who beat Prince Tractor by four lengths. Only the placed lot finished. High Glee Easily. Serge was the only scratching for the Trial Handicap. The field got away to a good line, but Rebel Lad was slow to move and Great Empire dropped his rider. High Glee soon took charge and came right away to win by eight lengths. McHeath, Queen Dorothy, Mount Vai, and Pompeii were prominent behind the leader, and Land Raid as they turned for home, but the winner had the finish to himself. Land Raid, who found strong support, struggled into a place, but it was only a one-horse race. One for a Favourite. Milford was the popular pick for the Brighton Handicap. Daring Deed made the running, mid Milford joined Poniard, Red Dance, Royal Pal, and Latitude as they followed the leader up the rise. Milford joined Daring Deed at the home turn aud then came on to win nicely by two lengths from Daring Deed, who beat Vocal a short length. Poniard was n neck away fourth and they were well clear of the others. Red Dunce broke down in the race and was destroyed. Odds-on Steeple Winner. Umtali, whose leg had filled, mid Parasang were struck out of the Otago Steeples and Graball was an odds-on chance. Gold Knight went out at the first fence and, after racing with French Fleet until five furlongs from home, Graball came away to win easily by a dozen lengths. Favourite’s Bad Race. Romo was taken out of the Provincial Handicap. Nightform was backed to a short price, but ran a bad race. Royal Gallant get the pace from Double Shot and Amy Johnson, who were followed by Fracas’, the others were racing together a couple of lengths behind Fracas. They raced in the same order to the home turn, where Fracas moved up and Nightform began to improve hie position. Amy Johnson went up to Royal Gallant and Nightform was still moving up. Amy Johnson wore down and beat Royal Gallant half a length; Nightform was three lengths away and Double Shot next. Fracas was last to finish. Race for June Hurdles. Lycidas started favourite in a good betting race on the June Hurdles, but settled his chance by hitting heavily at the six-furlong post. Sunward made the running and led Mount Boa and Black Duke up the rise. Sunward landed over the last hurdle about three lengths in front of Black Duke, and in the run home won all out by a short length. Palmary

was about two lengths away third, and Lycidas next. Black Duke would have been harder to beat if allowed to make up hie ground when racing along the back. Mount Boa spoilt his chance by indifferent hurdling. A Tight Finish. Travenna was struck out of the M’inter Handicap. Sea Fox was a good lavourite. Master Anomaly and Royal Sceptre led the wav along the back from Sea Fox, Great Shot, Knock Out and Kamal Pasha. Knock Out dropped back going up the rise and Sea Fox and Kamal lasha went up as they straightened for home inside the dist..nce. Sea Fox and Kamal Pasha were Iglitiiig it out when Guarantee shot up on the rails. A good finish saw Sea Fox beat Kamal lasha a head, Guarantee a short head away th iu and Master Anomaly close up tourtn. Knock Out faded out. Another Outsider. Gold Fox got badly away in the St. Clair Handicap, and Unseen and Moneygran carried the field along. unseen looked a sure winner when he for home, but collapsed before reaehjn.-, the distance, and Silk Arrow, finis i n well on the outside, won from June tn Third, who put in a late run to cut impala out of second money. Blazon was fourth in a strung-out field. Unseen , I innl Bell, Grand Review nnd Merry Del V al. who were prominent in the early stages, all dropped out in the run home.
