OTAKI MEETING

Cup Won by Walton Park COTTESMORE’S SPRINT Favourites Fare Poorly (By The Watcher.) It did not prove easy to pick the winners at Levin on Saturday, where the Otaki Maori Racing Club opened its winter meeting. Only two favourites were successful, and while there were no outstanding surprises, improved form was unexpectedly to the fore in more than one event. Particularly was this the case in the win of Walton Park in the principal event, the Raukawa Cup. Soundly beaten each day at Woodville, a course on which he was favoured by its lay-out and long straight, he surprised on the turning track at Levin by always being handy and actually issuing his challenge on the turn. Cottesmore showed improvement also on his last outing at Egmont, where he had finished behind Refreshed. Racing was held under ideal conditions, the weather being fine and mild With a warm sun early. Later conditions were overcast. The track was in good Order, but heavy, and it cut up a lot, though rolling after each race kept it in good order. Four of the eight runners came down in the opening event, the hurdle race. Three jockeys escaped with a shaking, but A. Jenljins. the rider of Diamond, broke his left collarbone. There was a good attendance, and the totalisator handled £6495, against £5297 on the corresponding day last year at Otaki, which was also a Saturday, the increase being £II9S. The meeting was very well run, and although the first race was seven or eight minutes late, the lost time was made up, and the starter’s signal for the last race was down before time. The work of the totalisator staff was prompt indeed, and the public also appreciated the new dial dividend indicators, which were worked in conjunction with the ordinary rotary figure indicators on the face of the totalisator. Half the Field Fall. The hurdles turned out a poor contest. Two horses fell at the first fence, and ttyo at the next, leaving onlj - half the field running. Diamond went first, and brought down Arctic Titar, and at the next Afflication enme down and Count Willonyx fell over him. Saltspray also made a poor jump here, and fell back. Esteem then looked like winning, but Air Laddie went past him in the back stretch, and stayed there. Sidtspray was a long way back third, and Minos completed the course. Esteem had every chance. The form looked very poor. Saltspray ran a fair race only, the almost uprjght fences, which no doubt contributed to the falls, giving bjm trouble. Maiden to Favourite. Sporting Song. favourite for the maiden event, won comfortably at the finish. Nightlass, Entheos. Sporting Song and Meritor began best. Popette heading the bunch. Nightlass soon drifted back, but the others carried on to the straight, where Meritor ran off the course, and Entheos tired. This left Sporting Song in charge,u.nd although he could not have done any better he was not seriously challenged. Popette hung on for second from Eka Tere, and then came Terry, Garter Red. Entheos, Count Roussillon, and Earl Colossus. The form was very moderate, and nothing could test the winner. Entheos will improve. Ridden with Confidence. Very keen betting was seen for the three topweights in the hack splint, which, in the finish, saw Gold Mission a comfortable winner. Acceptable and Debut led Gold Mission

to the straight. Acceptable here retired, and Debut came on, but ho had no chance with Gold Mission’s challenge. Merry Ruler was a moderate third, followed by Happy Hunting and Acceptable. Gold Mission could haVe won by a much bigger margin. She was always being confidently ridden. Debut ran well, but Acceptable stopped quickly. Merry Ruler showed improvement. Winner Improves, Walton Park scored a narrow win in the Raukawa Cup from Lapel and the favourite, Might, and Lapel looked un1U< Lapel lost several lengths at the start, Trishna cutting out the pace from Gaiusfid, Lady Ronald, Might, Davistock, Lapel and Walton Park, Lapel having run up quickly on the fence. Might took on the leader five furlongs from home and led into the straight with Walton lark, who had run up to the front round the home turn. Might weakened over the last bit and Walton Park had then to sta 1 oft a challenge from Lapel, the three being bunched fairly closely at the finish. Davistoek, Lady Ronald and Gamsfid were all well up, Trishna tailing off. , Walton Park was kept closer to his field all the way, and he won well, though there is no doubt that had Lapel got away on terms he would have won.. Too much use appeared to bo made of Might. The others, bar Trishna, all ran good races. The turns seemed to bother bainsfid. ' „ ~ Easy for Favourite. Boudoir’s win in the hack distance event was a decisive one, and. although favourite, she paid a good price. Boudoir was always well placed on the rails and after Tupurangi had rushed up from last to first down the back and had led into the straight, Boudoir beat him without much effort Hunting Blag was a very poor third, followed by Auss e Ra and Kurapae. , . Tupurangi was made too much use of, but it is improbable she would have bea en the winner. Gay Boy aud the otheis ran bad races. , Cottesmore’s Sprint. Croupier, favourite for the open sprint, failed to reveal the form expected. Hunting Lodge got poorly oft. Body line, actually the first out, gave way q The Tiger, who led from Cottesmore, Rfresher Navaho, and Croupier, Bodyline soon going back, and finally being a bad last The Tiger led round the turn and into the straight from Cottesmore and Croupier, and although he ran on wel Cottesmore gained the upper hand in th run home. Croupier weakened, and Bodyline finished on again for a gool third, with Refresher, . C^??‘ er ,’ ine 1 Hunting Lodge handy and all in hue. Cottesmore won in good style. ILe Tiger showed all his pace. Body! ne and Hunting Lodge were both unueky. Refresher and Croupier weie not dis graced Ind Croupier should improve with the race. Another Favourite Fails. Ethiop was favoured for the concluding event, but was never going like a winner, although he ran a creditable lace. Alby settled down in front, and moKecl like staving there until Arctic King challenged in the straight, and headed him off Ethiop held on for a moderate third from Whetuma, who was by a bunched lot headed by Royal Banquet and Joy Stick. Arctic King W'On well at the finish. Alby’s effort under his weight was a good one, and Ethiop was not disgraced, though he was no doubt expected to do better. Whetuma ran well for , a , frcsh , Leprechaun got squeezed back in the first furlong. Details of the Racing TARARUA HACK HURDLES, of £OO, second £lO, third £5. One mile and 3 W D. Mexted’s br. g.
