FISHING TRIP

Princeton Graduates Bring Own Launch SPORTSMEN’S PARADISE Dominion Special Service. Auckland, February 12. In the course of a unique fishing and hunting trip in the East and among the Pacific islands two young Princeton graduates, Messrs. IIRutherford and R. IL Poole, arrived by the Marama. They brought their own launch, in which the former will engage in deep-sea fishing in New Zealand waters. . Mr. Poole left soon after the arrival of the Manama for Lake Taupo in the hope of enjoying the trout fishing of which he had heard the highest praise in America.

A third member of the party was Mr. E. Williams, professional game fishing launchman. The two sportsmen left Vancouver last year and crossed to Japan and China. Meanwhile' their launch, in charge of Mr. Williams, was brought tc Manila, where they picked it up. A 1500-mile fishing cruise through the Philippines proved disappointing, it being the wrong season for marlin and make.

Realising that good fishing was not to be bad, the party turned its attentions to big game shooting in IndoChina in the area that has come to be regarded as probably the best in Asia. Leaving Saigon they motored inland, crossed the jungle on foot, proceeded up inland streams in native canoes, and finally arrived at a veritable sportsmen’s paradise. Almost every tropical animal, except perhaps the rhinoceros, was in great abundance and both sportsmen were highly enthusiastic over the results of their expedition. As soon as the launch has been overhauled Mr. Rutherford and his launchman will make for the Bay of Islands, where he will be joined later by relatives from the United States. lie will then try his luck in waters further north, having formed the opinion that good sport should be enjoyed in the less frequented area between Whangaroa and North Cape. After five to six weeks there he will cruise to Wellington, fishing in likely areas on the way down and, leaving the launch to be shipped to Tahiti, he will engage in trout fishing.
