‘GROTESQUE SLANDER’

Allegations About Competitors at Women’s Games GERMAN INDIGNATION Berlin, September 20. “A grotesque slander” is how the newspaper “Naehtausgabe” describes the allegations of Mr. B. C. Sims, manager of the South African team at the British Empire Games, that some of the foreign competitors at the Women’s World. Games were men. The paper assumes that the remarks were directed against the Germans, although they neither shaved nor spoke in deep voices.

REFEREE’S DENIAL

London, September 20.

Mr. W. J. Pepper, official referee at the Women’s Olympiad, said that Mr. Sims’s allegation was absurd. “It would have been impossible,” he declared.

COMPETITOR’S COMMENTS

Cape Town, September 20.

Miss Eileen Crockart, who represented South Africa in the field events in the women’s world games, said that quite a few women athletes had strong beards, and like a man had to shave daily. “We satisfied ourselves that they were females all right, but in every other respect I would call them more man than woman."

CANADIANS AMUSED Vancouver, September 20. Canadian women at the London world athletic meeting laugh at ’ the suggestion of Mr, Sims. Miss Hilda Strike confirms the story that some shaved, but states that many of them, particularly the Germans, were heavily haired.
