SURPLUS LIKELY
Unemployment Insurance Fund in Britain LOWER CONTRIBUTIONS? (British Official Wireless.) (Received May 2, 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, May 1. Speaking in the House of Commons to-night, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, said that with unemployment moving downward as at present, there was every prospect that the unemployment insurance fund was going to save a substantial -.surplus after paying debt charges and after the restoration of the economy cuts. Under the provisions of the Unemployment Bill, the disposal of that surplus was not in the hands of the Government. but of a Statutory Committee It was within the power of the committee to recommend, if it thought fit, that there should be a reduction of contribution. It seemed to him fairly clear that there would be a surplus which would allow of the committee making some recommendation of that kind.
