The steamer Jap is now a total wreck. The salvaging of tlie timber cargo is being undertaken. The Jap. a wooden coastal steamer, ran aground on a sandspit on April 3 in the vicinity of Cape Hawke, about 60 miles north of Newcastle. The vessel was of 242 tons gross, and is owned by Coastal Steamships, Limited. The crew of ten safely abandoned tlie vessel during the day. The Jap had a full load of timber for Sydney. She bad been bar-bound for several days and was being towed to sea when she grounded.
