WAIHEMO’S STRANDING
Finding of Marine Court (Received April 6, 7.30 p.m.) Suva, April 6. A marine court investigated the stranding of the Waihfino. It found that the master had committed an error of judgment not amounting to negligence and not requiring the censure of tlie court. The master was ordered to pay the cost of the inquiry, £B/8/-. The Waibemo from Newcastle went ashore in Navuln passage. Fiji. Inst Sunday, when approaching Lautoka, where she was bound to load raw sugar for Vancouver. She was refloated a few days later. Built in 1919. the Waihemo lias a gross tonnage of 5627, and is engaged in the Union Company’s cargo service from Pacific Coast ports to New Zealand and Australia. JAP A TOTAL WRECK Sydney, April 6. The steamer Jap is now a total wreck. The salvaging of tlie timber cargo is being undertaken. The Jap. a wooden coastal steamer, ran aground on a sandspit on April 3 in the vicinity of Cape Hawke, about 60 miles north of Newcastle. The vessel was of 242 tons gross, and is owned by Coastal Steamships, Limited. The crew of ten safely abandoned tlie vessel during the day. The Jap had a full load of timber for Sydney. She bad been bar-bound for several days and was being towed to sea when she grounded.
