WOMEN’S CONVENTION
Christian Temperance ' Union At yesterday morning’s session of the Women’s Christian . Temperance Union convention 146 answered the roll-call, and the .proceeding?) were opened with devotions *by Mrs. E. McCombs, M.P. Mrs. McCombs, who is president of the Sumner W.C.T.U.. was presented with a beautiful lei by Miss Pyle on behalf of the W.C.T.U. women of Honolulu. Mrs. McCombs gave a short address on the restrictions that had to be placed by the Christchurch City Council on the public dance halls there. Blue badges were presented, to those unions who had had large increases in membership, Hikurangi union being first with 83 per cent. The afternoon session was opened with devotions by Miss Kirk, J.P. Greetings were received from Miss Powell, the only living member of the first union formed in New Zealand, the 1.0.G.T., and member of many unions in New Zealand. . A service of memories was .conducted by the vice-president. Mrs. Hiett. The pioneers of the W.C.T.U. who-had passed away were remembered when delegates placed flowers in a wreath, and those pioneers who still lived were honoured by red flowers “for service” being placed in a basket. “Y” CONFERENCE Commenced YesterdayIn addition to the general convention the sixth “Y” conference of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union opened yesterday in St. John's Presbyterian schoolroom. There were present 22 delegates from all parts of New Zealand. The conference began by devotions led by tlie president, Mrs. Appleby. Then followed the appointment of reporter, letter writer, commit tee of courtesies, and pianist. The rolj-class was answered by a verse of praise. Greetings were read from various “Y” unions. • Five-minute papers rend on the following questions were enjoyed by all: — “Would the Coming of World Peace Tender to Better Citizenship?” “Youths Idenls of Citizenship”; null “What Does Citizenship Mean to a Woman?’’ A few minutes were spent, in a prayer circle for missionary members of the “Y<’ movement.
